Ohi’a’ai (Engenia malaccensis) or Mountain apple was brought to Hawai’i by the original Polynesian voyagers. The wood was used for building, dyes were extracted and used in cloth making and the fruit eaten. The bark was used medicinally. Kids love the fruit and climbing the trees to pick it. It reminds islanders of “small kid time”.
